School Board Elections Offer a Chance for Real Change

Last month, we hosted several African American candidates for local school boards who, if elected, could substantially change the representation and the culture of our local school boards where budgets, policies, school siting and renovation, teacher selection and cultural inclusion decision-making occurs.

The Special elections take place on May 18th. While the Portland NAACP cannot endorse individual candidates for public office (school board positions are deemed public office), I can encourage you to exercise the power of your vote, to select candidates who can speak with authority, history and cultural conviction to the issues that matter, and who can stand for equitable education for all of our children.

The candidates for Portland Public School Board are Rev. Herman Greene, Portland Public Schools District 4 and Gary Hollands, Portland Public Schools District 5. Candidate for Portland Community CollegeDistrict 7 is Sabin School principal, Reiko Williams. Candidate for Newberg School Board is Tai Harden. Go VOTE!
