Portland Metro: Community Placemaking Internship

Position summary

Hours/schedule: 15 hours/week; primarily weekday, daytime hours; possibly including some evenings or weekends
Salary: $18/hour
Duration: June 2022 through May 2023
 
The purpose of this internship is to provide support to Metro’s Community Placemaking grant program. These grants fund community-led, equity-centered arts and culture efforts that strengthen people’s connections to each other and the places they care about. The intern will gain experience in grant administration by working closely with the grant program manager through the four seasons of a grant cycle - outreach, application review, contracting and cycle refinement. The intern will also play an important role in expanding the influence of the Community Placemaking program through research, writing and community engagement.

 

The ideal candidate is passionate about community development and deeply familiar with social justice challenges in the greater Portland region. They should be comfortable engaging with community members, but also successful when working independently on long-term research or writing projects. This position will primarily consist of remote work.

 

Essential job duties

During the course of the year, the intern will be involved in the following activities:

  • Publicize the grant opportunity using various platforms and outreach techniques to communicate with stakeholder organizations and community members

  • Review, analyze and summarize community input from grant applications

  • Assist with grant administration tasks, such as preparing paperwork, reviewing progress reports and tasks related to the translation of application materials

  • Conduct research on best practices related to equity-centered grant making

  • Create written pieces that document the program, such as articles featuring grantees and evaluation of aspects of the grant program

  • When capacity permits, temporarily assist other department projects or programs

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities include

  • Experience advocating for racial equity outcomes

  • Professional experience and/or a passion for community development, arts and culture, and community engagement

  • Firsthand familiarity with parts or all of the greater Portland region

  • Enjoys working independently and can stay focused on long-term projects

  • Ability review and synthesize qualitative information into meaningful written and/or visual products

  • Clear and succinct writing skills

  • Experience working with spreadsheets

  • Savvy with multiple platforms of social media

  • Well organized and detail oriented

Minimum requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and

  • Pursuing Bachelor's degree
